After MSHC submitted an application to the city of Chelsea (city) for a building permit to renovate the property, city officials expressed concern that the Chelsea Oxford House would effectively function as a boarding house. Such a use was not permitted in the zoning district where the property was located. Drug-free housing provides a safe haven for those who wish to re-enter mainstream society after a struggle with substance addiction. The peer group plays a key role where individuals going through after-care may not get the understanding they need from friends or family, who can not fully understand their situation. Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs), Office-Based Opioid Treatment Programs (OBOTs), and bridge programs provide MOUD and offer other counseling and support services.

Governor Charlie Baker has proposed expanding access to long-term care in order to tackle opioid addiction, which claims four lives in the Bay State every day. He eventually became sober, but he needed a place to live where he could focus on his recovery. Recovery high schools are public high schools for youth ages that provide educational environments to support youth recovering from SUD. They serve 30 to 50 students per school and are supported by the state, local school districts, and educational collaboratives. Students receive support for their recovery within an academic setting consistent with Massachusetts State Standards. Students with a diagnosed SUD can choose to attend a recovery high school. According to Stephen Powers, he has seen sober residences where avaricious landlords cram hundreds of men into cramped, filthy apartments.

You will also have to pass a background screening, and the initial drug and alcohol testing. MSHC purchases single-family houses in residential neighborhoods and operates them as “sober houses,” where men or women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction may live together in a safe and affordable home environment. MSHC owns each property and leases it to an unincorporated association comprised of the house’s residents. The lease is signed by an elected “house president” on behalf of the unincorporated association.
